Learning the 4 Stages of Mesothelioma

Every year, doctors diagnose thousands of new cases of mesothelioma globally. This is a type of fatal lung cancer which starts in the mucous-covered lining of the lungs. As devastating a disease it is, the cancer is usually caused as a result of one having been exposed to asbestos. However, visible symptoms as well as lung damage may not appear for several decades, following the time of exposure. Once doctors confirm the existence of this deadly ailment in a patient, they immediately turn to what is medically referred ‘mesothelioma prognosis’. This is basically their best predication of a patient’s battle ahead and also the possible outcome. While the disease is difficult to beat, and with several aspects of it which one cannot control, there are certain things that can be done by a patient to help make the situation less worse.

Prognosis for Each Stage

An early diagnosis and overall patient health are 2 critical factors. The type of the cancer a patient has, the cell structure of the cancer cells, the stage that the disease is in as well as the patient’s age and sex also have an impact.

Stage 1

This is the first stage just as the name implies and it is considered contained. Stage 1 is further broken into 2 stages as follows;

Stage 1A

Cancer is taking toll in one side of the chest wall lining.It may also be present within the chest cavity between the lining which covers the diaphragm as well as the lungs. At this point, the disease has not yet extended to the lining which covers the lungs

Stage 1B

Cancer is taking toll in one side of the chest wall lining as well as the lining which covers the lungs. The symptoms of the disease may also be starting to manifest in the lining of the chest cavity between the lungs as well as the lining which covers the diaphragm.

Stage 2

The disease is ingrained in one side of the chest particularly in the lining of the chest cavity between the lungs, the lining which protects the diaphragm as well as that which protects the lung. It has extended to one or both of the diaphragm muscles and lungs.

Stage 3

At this stage, the disease has spread throughout the lung lining as well as chest on one side of the body. A patient may undergo curative surgery along with other treatments like chemotherapy and radiation if there are chances for it to become eradicated.

Stage 4

At this point, mesothelioma sadly can’t be cured using any treatment and it is now ingrained in both sides of the body. The disease may have developed to every part of the chest. There is nothing that can be done except to pray for a miracle!

Prognosis for Early Diagnosis

If early diagnosis (the first two stages) is done, it gives a cancer specialist a much better chance to effectively treat the cancer. That is why it is advisable for people who have had exposure to asbestos to go for cancer screening without waiting to detect any physical symptoms.
